As jewellers we are spoiled a little and we get to see a little of everything so it is natural that every person in the industry has a favorite.

As a designer I have a preference to a cushion cut diamond. This specific cut of diamond cut is probably about 300 years old so it has a great old world feel to it but with modern cutting techniques it has become more refined and more popular as a choice for engagement ring.

A great example of a famous cushion cut diamond is the stunning 140 carat “Regent” diamond. This diamond started out as a 410 carat rough stone that was found in India in the early 1700’s it was later sent to England and cut into the 140 carat plus stone. The diamond has a lot of great history behind it; people were murdered for it, it was lost at one stage and was even placed in the hilt of Napoleons sword during his coronation. Today the diamond sits on display in the Louvre in Paris and is still considered one of the finest diamonds in the world.

When I am looking for a cushion cut diamond for my customers I always start with the certificate. I prefer a GIA graded certificate for all my diamonds, they are one of the oldest and most reputable graders in the industry. The next characteristic I look for is how square the stone is. Although cushion cut can get fairly rectangular in shape I feel the diamond has more life if it is no more than 1:06 in the length to width ratio. The more square the better. As for colour and clarity I think the best value for money in the cushion shapes is a G colour and SI1 clarity. There are no cut grades on fancy cut diamonds.

The cushion cut is a great versatile shape. I have done everything from antique design to modern retro design with this shape. In my opinion, the cushion cut is the best value for money and the prettiest stone on the market.

Quality plays hand in hand with budget and style. Knowing what quality of diamond or gemstones you are looking for will make your whole buying process more enjoyable.
